The National Weather Service in Topeka issued a Wind Chill Warning yesterday, which is set to expire at noon on Tuesday. Dangerously cold wind chills, expected to get as low as 40 degrees below zero, will be felt throughout Northeast Kansas. NWS recommends avoiding outdoor activities if possible, as wind this cold could cause frostbite on exposed skin in about ten minutes. Anyone who must go outdoors is urged to wear appropriate clothing, hat and gloves to minimize exposed skin. Many houses of worship in the area have closed for the weekend to protect their congregants. The most recent closing is First United Methodist Church in Manhattan. They have canceled in-person worship tomorrow “with the protection and safety of everyone in mind.” FUMC released this statement on social media: “What a blessing it is that we can worship together online at 11:00am on Facebook, the church’s website, or listen to the KMAN broadcast at 11:30. Your pastors, Dan Myers, and our tech guru, Robbie Phillips, will be at the church this morning recording a worship service for us to experience together online. We are so very grateful we are able to do this!”
