Veterans returned home on Friday to a larger than life welcome home after the return of the Wamego High School Honor Flight. KMAN contributing reporter Beth Day reports on the welcome home so many veterans never heard when returned from battle decades ago.
The Flight is sponsored by the WHS chapter of National Honor Society. It’s mission is to take veterans to Washington DC to see the memorials erected in their honor. But, just as important is connecting generations and the welcome home ceremony.
Shawn Hornung, sponsor, explains.
“For a lot of our veterans, the homecoming is the thanks they may not have received when they came home the first time. And that is one of the most special parts of our entire trip.”
Bob Willette, Wamego, was one of the veterans on this year’s flight. To him, the welcome was the most important part.
“It was a healing process for me. Because we didn’t have this when I was in the military. So much support from the Kansas Highway Patrol, the American Legion Riders, the police, and especially the community here. It’s a healing and I hope everyone got to experience it as much as I did.
This project is important not just to Wamego, but to the surrounding communities as veterans participate
from Manhattan, St. Marys, Rossville, Alma and beyond.
