Boys State of Kansas has a new executive director.
Boys State officials announced Monday that Kyle Wheatley has taken over as the executive director of the summer leadership program held annually at K-State.
Wheatley began his term July 1 and replaced Tom Weirman, who held the position for four years.
Sponsored by the American legion, Boys State is a mock government program allowing high school boys to practice leadership. The program simulates elections, political parties and government at the state, county and local levels.
It includes students who just completed their junior year and sophomore year of high school will hold its 2025 session June 1-7 in Manhattan. It will be the program’s 33rd consecutive session at K-State and its 87th overall.
A resident of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Wheatley was a 2003 Kansas Boys State delegate from Wichita Northwest High School, from which he graduated in 2004. Since then, he has served in several volunteer positions, including counselor roles, before rising to serve in advisor roles in 2013. Most recently, Wheatley served as an associate director and bank advisor.
A grandson of Army and Navy veterans, Wheatley graduated from Friends University in 2009 with a bachelor’s degree in music education. He then studied at the University of Alabama, graduating with a master’s of arts degree in education, curriculum and instruction in 2012.
Wheatley taught middle school and high school choir for 11 years in Fayetteville, Georgia; Fort Worth, Texas; and Granbury, Texas until 2023. He then worked as a consultant for Guidehouse, a consultancy based in Arlington, Virginia, working with federal clients on projects with emphasis in data analytics and data science.
Wheatley will announce the Kansas Boys State 2024-25 leadership team in the coming weeks.
