A familiar face is running once more for the Pottawatomie County Commission.
Nancy McCarter, the former county clerk, is running in the 2nd district on the commission. McCarter previously ran in the district back in 2020 against current commissioner Pat Weixelman.
“I’ve been in the county for 50 years,” she said. “I want to keep it as a great place to live and with the expansion of the commission to now five county commissioners, I felt like I was a good candidate because of my experience and knowledge of local government.”
McCarter also addressed what she will focus on if she is elected to the commission. She first pointed to reviewing the county’s policies. She also said her biggest concern was the county is not prepared enough for possible expansion.
“We’re going to possibly get 10,000 more people to our county in the next 10 years,” she said. “That means we need to get more roads, more fire stations, more EMS…”
McCarter says she opposes solar in the county and also voted against the expansion of the county commission back in 2022. She also expressed frustration with the county’s valuation recently going down for the first time in 15 years.
“I think they’ve been stockpiling money and I’m afraid that in two to three years they’re going to have to raise the mill levy,” she said.
McCarter served as the county clerk for 12 years from 2009-2021 and currently lives in Wamego. She is one of two candidates running for this seat. The other is Merl Page.
