As primary elections near, Riley County Clerk Rich Vargo is reminding residents to get registered to vote for the Aug. 6 primary election.
“The voter registration deadline for the primary is Jul. 16,” Vargo said. “If you want to vote in Riley County, you need to make sure you’re registered in the county. We’ve had several college kids drop ballots off from different counties in the past.”
Advanced voting then gets started the following day at 110 E. Courthouse Plaza with voting allowed from 7:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. until noon on Friday and also from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday Aug. 3.
Then on Election Day, polling is open in 26 locations across the county that are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Vargo reminds voters to go on the county website for more information.
“The website will give you a map of where you can find your polling information,” he said. “I highly suggest folks do that as there is also a sample ballot on the website. The sample ballot can allow people to know what races are going on so they’re not surprised when they go vote.”
Mail voting is allowed in Kansas and begins two weeks out. Vargo said that mail voting must be postmarked by the primary date of Aug. 6. Mail votes will not be accepted if the postmark date is after Aug. 6 on the envelope.
This primary election is different from the Mar. 19 presidential preference primary. This is the regular state primary that occurs on the first Tuesday in August every election year.
