Riley County saw its rural roots come out in full force this weekend as the fair, carnival, and rodeo highlighted the week’s events.

County Extension Director Gary Fike said this was the most people he’s ever seen for the event since he’s been involved.

“The turnout has been amazing, ” he said “This is my sixth fair here. And I think this Thursday night was the biggest Thursday night I’ve ever seen here. The Rodeo crowd was unbelievably large for Thursday. Friday night was really good. And as you can see here tonight, the whole fairgrounds is just packed with people. And so that’s good to see.”

Fike said that horses, swine, goats, cattle amongst other animals were all judged live at Hurlburt Barn inside CiCo Park.

He added that some of the animals will be available for purchase at the livestock sale on Monday night at the arena.

He spoke more on what made this year especially successful…

“We have more food vendors than ever, more barbecue places than we’ve ever had. There’s just a tremendous selection of different things to eat. So that always changes a little bit every year. The Carnival has been here three years in a row. And now the County uses WEEE Entertainment as our new provider and they’re doing a fantastic job.”

WEEE Entertainment is based out of Wichita, and operates the mobile carnival in Kansas and Oklahoma.

Citizens of all ages had plenty to do, with the younger audience participating in fair rides and art projects, while those older guests enjoyed adult beverages while watching the sold-out Kaw Valley-Rodeo.

4-H held live judging for farm animals of all sizes throughout the week, with some of the animals being put up for purchase at the livestock sale on Monday night at the Hurlburt Barn inside CiCo Park.
