“We’ve trained for this. This is what we want,” said Manhattan High head football coach Joe Schartz to his team before overtime in a 6A state championship game against Gardner-Edgerton on Saturday, Nov. 26, 2022, at Welch Stadium in Emporia. From the moment Manhattan High football fielded its first practice under the blazing summer sun, it expected to be competing for a state championship.

Four months later, the Indians are giving it their all as the sun sets on frigid fall nights — a price they’re willing to pay to be competing during the final week of high school football.

The West’s No. 2 seed Manhattan (12-0) and the East’s No. 1 seed Gardner Edgerton (11-1) are battling for it all Friday afternoon. It’s a rematch of the 2022 state title game at Emporia State’s Welch Stadium.
