WORK ZONE — Motorists drive on Anderson Avenue in Manhattan, Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2024. Since Aug. 7, Ebert Construction has been repairing and resurfacing Anderson between Seth Child Road/Kansas Highway 113 and Wreath Avenue. Traffic is down to one lane in each direction. The work is to last through late fall.
INCUMBENT — State Rep. Sydney Carlin, D-Manhattan, speaks during a town hall Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2024, in the Wildcat Chamber at the K-State Student Union. Carlin, who answered questions on various topics including crime and public safety, housing affordability and water conservation, is running unopposed for re-election to represent the 66th District in the Kansas House. The former Manhattan city commissioner and mayor has represented District 66 since 2003.
GET CREATIVE — Brittany Gorelick, an assistant professor of printmaking at Fort Hays State University, helps Jonas Ruder, 11, make a print Thursday, Oct. 3, 2024, during downtown Manhattan’s Block Print Party. The Mid-America Print Council held their biennial conference in October in the Little Apple, bringing printmaking professionals and enthusiasts from all over the world to enjoy speakers, workshops, panels, shows and exchanges. The block party featured vendors and demonstrations.
FRESH COAT — The former Panera Bread location at 325 E. Poyntz Ave. in Manhattan wears new paint as of Friday, Oct. 4, 2024. Hawaiian Bros Island Grill, a fast-casual restaurant with other Kansas locations in Lawrence, Lenexa and Shawnee, originally submitted plans in 2022 to open in the building.
HOLDING COURT — Manhattan High School seniors Mark Savage and Sophia Salmans were named homecoming king and queen during a football game versus Emporia, Friday, Oct. 4, 2024, at Bishop Stadium.

SCENIC VIEW — Manhattan Fire Department driver Mike Simmons looks down Saturday, Oct. 12, 2024, from the roof of Chick-fil-A in Manhattan. Between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., International Association of Firefighters Local 2275 held a “fill the boot” to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association, raising more than $2,800 for local kids.
PARKED — Construction equipment Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2024, fills the Loma Ridge Drive entrance to Roger Schultz Community Park in Manhattan. The city parks and recreation department is starting the first phase on the 76.5-acre park, which includes parking improvements and new amenities such as a playground and picnic tables.
RAISING AWARENESS — Red silhouettes stand Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2024, in the east court of Manhattan Town Center. October was Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and the Crisis Center displayed the silhouettes as “silent witnesses.” Each silhouette features a story of a local victim of domestic violence.
FALL PEEK — Maple leaves begin to change color on a tree Thursday, Oct. 17, 2024, near Manhattan Public Library.
SPOOKY SEASON — Ghosts, made out of cloths, sway from a tree Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2024, along North Fourth Street in Manhattan.

University organizations, sororities and fraternities painted businesses’ windows throughout the district for homecoming, which was themed this year “Wildcats: Then. Now. Forever.”
WORKING AWAY — Construction continues Thursday, Oct. 24, 2024, at the intersection of Fourth and Houston streets in downtown Manhattan. The intersection has been closed since August while crews are removing and reconstructing the road surface, storm sewer and sidewalks. Additionally, they will install landscaping and lighting.
TAKING FLIGHT — A flock of birds fly near thick clouds Thursday, Oct. 24, 2024, at CiCo Park in Manhattan. Storm chances were in the forecast for northeast Kansas, but the Little Apple seemed to avoid the precipitation.
