One option, a 1998 4800 International dual-purpose wildland pumper, is the fire department’s proposed pick. It costs $30,000 and has 44,400 miles.

“It is a dual-purpose truck, it has four wheel drive,” said Russel Stukey, the emergency management director, “So it’s not an aggressive, what we call heavy brush but it’s a truck that can help us fight both grass fires and house fires. It’s the right size to fit into the fire station.”

Stuckey said one old truck, the 1986 model Pumper 114, no longer works like it used to. Staff from Riley County Fire Department No. 1 and public works maintenance have decided it is not worth repairing.
