The Riley County police board on Wednesday approved 4-3 a budget increase of 5.68% for 2026.
The total increase is $1.64 million over 2025, for a total of $30.41 million.
This budget accommodates the move of the animal control program from Manhattan Fire Department to the Riley County Police Department. City and county governments have been debating that change for several months.
RCPD officials said it will cost them $341,634 to run the program next year, which is an increase from the $272,450 it cost this year under the Manhattan city government.
