Steve Miller, the former Kansas State athletics director who hired hall of fame head coach Bill Snyder, died earlier this week The Mercury has learned. His age and cause of death were unavailable as of press time.

“Steve was a dear friend and as is known by so many an extremely successful Administrator,” Snyder told the Mercury. “He had a major impact on the careers of many coaches and athletics directors. He and his wonderful family will always be in the hearts of so many.”

Miller, a native of Chicago, came to Manhattan in 1981 as the Wildcats’ track and field coach after having success at then-Division II California Polytechnic State University. As cross country and track and field coach at Cal Poly, Miller led the Mustangs to five NCAA Division II national championship titles (three in track and field and two in cross country), and eight California Collegiate Athletic Association titles (four in track and field and four in cross country).
