Cale Prater, Times of Pott County Rock Creek celebrates after a 3-1 win over Mulvane Thursday in the Mustangs’ state opener in Salina.

After run through the 4A State Baseball Championship, Rock Creek came just short of defending their title from a year ago, finishing as state runners-up following a hard-fought 6-4 loss to Fort Scott in the championship game.

Rock Creek — the reigning 4A state champions — picked up a first-round win over Mulvane to move into the semifinal matchup on day two of this year’s tournament. The Mustangs secured a thrilling 3-1 victory over McPherson in the semifinals, thanks in part to a strong pitching performance from Ryker Zoeller that carried the Mustangs through eight impressive innings, allowing just three hits and one unearned run while striking out six.
