The Kansas Highway Patrol is reminding drivers to slow down and respect work zone signage after a high-speed traffic stop in a construction zone last week on I-70, near Junction City.
According to a social media post from the agency, a KHP trooper was monitoring traffic in the area Friday morning when a driver sped through the construction zone at 100 miles per hour in a posted 60 mph zone. The driver was also observed passing several vehicles in a clearly marked no-passing section, just before traffic merged into a single lane.
“This stretch of road has signs posted well ahead of the work zone,” KHP stated. “They let drivers know that traffic is going to narrow down to a single lane and that the speed limit drops as you approach. The signs also say not to pass other vehicles.”
The driver was cited and given a combined fine and docket fee totaling $948.
Troopers say the signage is there to protect both drivers and workers, and ignoring them puts everyone at risk.
“It’s not just the trooper’s job to keep the work zone safe. It’s everyone’s job,” the post read. “Lives depend on people paying attention.”
KHP urges drivers to slow down, follow posted instructions, and avoid last-second lane changes or aggressive driving when approaching construction areas.
