    By Rose Gruenbacher

Southeastern Riley County residents may soon see developments in the area while companies pursue natural hydrogen deposits.

Interim county counselor Jacob Hansen said in Thursday’s Riley County Commission meeting that someone from the Wabaunsee County government called him, saying a large hydrogen deposit was found which borders Wabaunsee County but is mainly located in Riley County.

Hansen said HyTerra Ltd. found a deposit of 96.2% pure hydrogen in Riley County with their Nemaha Project. HyTerra is an Australian-based company drilling for white hydrogen in Kansas. White hydrogen is a naturally occurring gas, created when rainwater seeps underground and reacts with iron-rich rocks at high temperatures.
