WAMEGO — This fall and in the future, the Wamego High football team will carry a local boy’s love of life and football.

Hank Hartwich, a bubbling and smiling boy whose craving for football reached stratospheric heights, died of cancer earlier this year. He proudly wore his No. 1 jersey on and off the field.

“Hank was a passionate kid that loved to play football with his buddies,” incoming Wamego senior safety Jacob DeRouchey said. “Despite being a little bit smaller, he always competed as hard as he could and worked harder than everyone else. He was a very respectful kid within a very respectful family. It was a sad tragedy that happened within our community and we as a football team will make sure to support him and his family.”
