Riley County police are investigating two separate reports of fraud involving gift card scams reported on Friday, Oct. 17.
In the first case, officers responded at approximately 11:19 a.m. in Manhattan, where a 70-year-old woman reported being contacted by someone falsely claiming to be a law enforcement officer. The caller told the victim she had missed jury duty and instructed her to purchase gift cards to resolve the matter. The woman complied, resulting in a reported loss of approximately $3,000.
Later that day, at around 3:18 p.m. in Randolph, officers filed a second fraud report involving a 66-year-old man. According to police, the victim was scammed out of $25,000 worth of gift cards through an online scheme.
Both cases remain under investigation.
