One of the oldest chimpanzees in the world died Wednesday at Sunset Zoo.

Susie, 71, a Western chimpanzee had been a resident of Manhattan’s zoo since 1974.

“Sunset Zoo is deeply saddened to share the passing of Susie the Western chimpanzee,” officials wrote in a statement.

Officials said Susie had been under close veterinary and caretaker observation to monitor for expected age-related health challenges such as development of cataracts, arthritis, and muscle loss for many years. They said they had recently noticed a decline.
