An absolute dogfight for the Kansas State women ended in heartbreak Thursday afternoon as a last-second South Dakota 3-pointer gave the Wildcats their first loss of the season.
Down two with a second to play, South Dakota’s Patience Williams hit her first 3-pointer of the day, boosting the Coyotes ahead 72-71. A last-second lay-up attempt from freshman Gina Garcia didn’t fall, and the Wildcats moved to 3-1 after the loss.
K-State got off to a slow start offensively, trailing early and missing its first six shots before cashing in on its first bucket at the 4:36 mark.
And 8-0 run for the Wildcats put them ahead five, 14-9, but South Dakota responded with six straight of their own on back-to-back 3-pointers to take a one-point lead, 16-15, into the second quarter.
