A Manhattan landmark is getting a brand-new look.

Wareham Hall officials broke ground Wednesday on a $40 million project to renovate the historic opera house at 410 Poyntz Ave., which has stood as a centerpiece of downtown Manhattan since 1880.

“Everybody has memories, everybody has stories, nights spent in these seats,” executive director Blade Mages told a gathering of supporters Wednesday. “That’s really the soul of this place, whether it was a recent sold out movie night or a fundraiser, or every time somebody has pulled us aside to say, ‘Hey, I remember when.’ Those stories are reminding us every day why this building matters.”
