“The Fighting Sixth,” an Army unit with over 160 years of history, permanently ceased activity Wednesday at Fort Riley.

Retired Maj. Gen. Lonnie Hibbard, guest speaker during the 1st Squadron, 6th Cavalry Regiment inactivation ceremony, highlighted the storied past of the Fighting Sixth during the ceremony at King Field House.

The Fighting Sixth was active for 164 years, serving in the Civil War battles of Antietam and Gettysburg, Normandy and Ardennes in World War II and more recently in the nations of Vietnam, Bosnia, Iraq and Afghanistan.

As part of the Army Transformation Initiative, the Army is inactivating all of its Air Cavalry Squadrons, including the 1st Squadron, 6th Cavalry Regiment.

Soldiers from 1-6 CAV will be transferred across Fort Riley to fill vacancies and increase operational readiness across the formation. Equipment is being transferred in the same fashion.
