Crews contain grass fire near structure in Geary County

The Geary County Rural Fire Department responded Sunday morning to a grass fire that was initially reported as possibly threatening a nearby structure with animals inside.

The call came in around 8:18 a.m. Upon arrival, firefighters were able to contain the blaze to two wood piles and prevent it from spreading to any buildings. No injuries or structural losses were reported.

Fire officials are urging residents to recheck any recent burns from the past week. Winds can easily stir up lingering embers and reignite materials, increasing the risk of grass or brush fires under dry and breezy conditions.
