Construction will begin next year on a low- to moderate-income senior living center in Manhattan.

In a unanimous vote last week, the city commission approved a final development agreement, land transfer and solar power development plan for Sunflower Flats, clearing the way for 62 new affordable housing units on the city’s south side.

Where the city’s parking lots currently sit at Fifth and Pierre Street, one lot will become the site for Sunflower Flats while the other will remain free parking.

A partnership between the Manhattan Housing Authority and HousingMHK, the project aims to provide high-quality, energy-efficient homes for working families, seniors and residents who are priced out of the private market.
