Wind-driven grass fire extinguished on Geary County

Geary County Rural Fire Department responded Thursday afternoon to a grass fire fueled by extreme winds in the 2400 block of West Lyon Creek Road.

The call came in around 1:10 p.m. Fire officials requested five trucks due to the high wind conditions, though three units — including the department’s new brush truck — were ultimately used to extinguish the fire. The remaining two trucks were canceled and returned to normal service areas.

According to the department, the fire began after a resident discarded fireplace ashes outside earlier in the day. Strong winds exposed lingering embers, igniting the surrounding grass.

Fire crews remained on scene for roughly 40 minutes. No injuries were reported.
