Two KDOT construction projects are set to begin in Pottawatomie County on Monday. The first project will be a repair of the county bridge near Belvue at the Pottawatomie/Wabaunsee county line that is expected to take one year to complete. The bridge is located at Schoeman and Paxico Roads and spans the Kansas River and is located approximately 1.5 miles southeast of Belvue. A.M. Cohron and Sons Inc., an Iowa based contractor, will be heading the project. The project is expected to cost $11.2 million. A candidate for the Kansas Senate says he waited too long to remove his name from the ballot and is no longer actively campaigning for office. Matthew Robin, a Democrat running in Kansas Senate District 18 against State Representative Kenny Titus confirmed the following in an email saying he hasn’t been actively campaigning since late-August. He did not respond immediately to requests for further comment. The 18th district encompasses portions of Pottawatomie, Shawnee and Jefferson Counties and has been represented by Republican Kristen O’Shea since 2021. She announced earlier this year she would not run for re-election.

RCPD arrested a local man in Manhattan on Tuesday morning on charges of child sex crimes. Carey Cortez, 47, of Manhattan was arrested just after 8:30 a.m. in the 1300 block of Baehr (Bear) Place. He is charged in this case with four counts of aggravated criminal sodomy with a victim less than 14 years of age and two counts of aggravated indecent liberties with a child. Due to the nature of the crime, no further information is being released at this time. Cortez currently is confined on a bond of $250,000.

Riley County Police Department officials are looking for feedback on how to better serve the community. At Monday’s Riley County Law Enforcement Agency board, RCPD director Brian Peete said his department has a survey for members of the public to take. The survey is a requirement for RCPD to maintain its accreditation. “Part of the standards or the requirements to stay accredited is that we’re remaining involved in the public,” Peete said. “We’re looking to actively solicit feedback on how we can do better and what we are doing correctly.” The full story can be read at The Mercury.

Riley County elections officials Tuesday said that they’ve added an additional day of advanced voting for voters across Riley County. Advanced voting will be now occur this Saturday Oct. 26 from 8 a.m. to noon at the Riley County Office Building on the 2nd floor at 110 East Courthouse Plaza. County clerk Rich Vargo says that the added day will make it more convenient for voters and also help them avoid long lines as they’re expecting a large turnout on Election Day. A structure replacement project is set to begin in early-November on Wildcat Creek Road. The project, which is located approximately 2.5 miles west of North Scenic Drive, will begin on Monday Nov. 4. The road will be closed to through traffic during construction from North Scenic to Saddle Rock Road. Crews hope to have the project completed by Friday Nov. 15.

A Dickinson County man was arrested on charges of child sex crimes over the weekend after a month’s long investigation by the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office. Stephen Gillenwater, 45, of Brostow, Oklahoma, was arrested on Saturday by the Abilene Police Department on an arrest warrant related to this case that began back in March on a tip regarding sexual exploitation of a child. Gillenwater is charged with aggravated indecent liberties with a child, electronic solicitation of a child, sexual exploitation of a child and aggravated endangerment of a child. Sen. Usha Reddi faces a challenge from former USD 378 Riley County Schools Superintendent Brad Starnes in the race for the 22nd District seat in the Kansas Senate. Reddi, a Democrat, was appointed to her seat after then-Sen. Tom Hawk retired at the end of 2022. The District 22 seat has been in Democratic control since 2012, when Hawk won it. Reddi was a Manhattan city commissioner from 2013 to 2023, and she served as the mayor from 2016 to 2017 and in 2020. She also ran for the U.S. Senate in 2020 as a Democrat but dropped out in…

Unemployment remained unchanged in the state of Kansas for the month of September from the month of August. Unemployment remains at 3.3% in the state of Kansas but was down to 3.1% in Riley County and 2.7% in Pottawatomie County. The drop to 3.1% in Riley County is down 0.7% from 3.8% in the month of August. Unemployment is also down in Geary County to 4.3% and Wabaunsee saw a drop to 2.9%. Dickinson County saw a significant drop from 6% in August to 3.1% in September. Since Sept. 2023, Kansas’ seasonally adjusted total nonfarm jobs have increased by 19,200.…
