A Pottawatomie County commissioner says some of those criticizing her reimbursement requests are doing so because she wasn’t in favor of preserving the courthouse. McKee has been under fire for her reimbursement requests from other commissioners and members of the community in recent meetings, with criticism directed at claimed mileage and the purchase of a frappe she bought at McDonald’s. In an interview with KMAN on Tuesday, McKee said she felt the way others were handling the issue bordered on harassment.

K-State’s enrollment for the 2024-25 school year went up for a second straight year. University president Richard Linton on Monday told local government officials that the small uptick in enrollment partially is a result of attracting in-state students to Manhattan. “They come here because they’re overwhelmed by the authenticity and the realness of the people here in Manhattan,” he said. “So I think we just have to get people on campus and show them what this community is about — especially athletes, because we have around a 90% success rate when we do that.” More on this story can be…

A local man who was previously arrested for child sex crimes is set to be in court on Tuesday for the start of a three-day jury trial. 29-year-old Tristian Gooden-Heit was arrested in Aug. 2022 on 15 counts of sexual exploitation of a child and single counts of a computer crime and interference with law enforcement and tampering with the evidence. Gooden-Heit allegedly sent nude photos of a minor girl through the cellphone of the girl’s boyfriend on the afternoon of Jul. 26, 2022. A second juvenile has been arrested in the ongoing investigation of threats posted on social media towards USD 475 schools. Junction City Police announced on Saturday that the second juvenile has been charged with an aggravated criminal threat which is a Level-5 person felony. As with the first juvenile who was arrested, they were transported to the police department for processing and then later released to their parents. Six K-State students have been awarded the nationally competitive Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship for international study opportunities. The selected students are Hannah Macke a senior from Baileyville in agribusiness, Kadin Waterman, a sophomore from Fontana in park management and conservation, Thomas Worstell, a graduate student from Blue Springs, MO in architecture and Richard Charlton, a junior from Tyner, NC in wildlife and outdoor enterprise management. Two other students chose not to be identified. The Gilman scholarship provides up to $5,000 to help US undergraduate students at two-year or four-year colleges or universities participate in study abroad programs worldwide.
Kansas Senator Jerry Moran introduced legislation on Thursday looking to address a national housing shortage and make it easier for rural workers to live in the communities they serve. The bill which was introduced with Maine Senator Angus King is called the Farmhouse-to-Workforce Housing Act and would expand the existing Housing Preservation Grants program to allow rural homeowners to construct additional housing on their property – such as an attached apartment unit or a small home nearby – to be available for rent. “There is a high demand for rural housing across Kansas, and it’s important that our housing programs…
