The Environmental Protection Agency announced the selection of Kansas State to receive a $4 million grant in funding over the course of the next five years. The grant is to provide technical assistance and increase the capacity of Tribal Nations and entities to build sustainable brownfield programs, establish and enhance their Tribal Response Programs, and conduct and oversee brownfields assessment and cleanup activities. A Riley County man was sentenced to prison on Monday for attempted voluntary manslaughter. 46-year-old Jarman Morgan was sentenced to 136 months in prison in Riley County District Court by Judge John Bosch on one count of attempted voluntary manslaughter. Morgan was also sentenced to 31 months for aggravated battery and 13 months for violating the Kansas Offenders Registration Act. Morgan had plead guilty to the three counts back in November 2023. At their final meeting of 2023 Tuesday night, the Manhattan City Commission approved a development agreement with Back 9 Development for the Midtown Aggieville Project. The plan consists of the city issuing $80 million in industrial revenue bonds to Back 9 as well and extending their timeline to construct the two projects to January 2026. The main topic of debate on Tuesday was the usage of transient guest tax to fund the cities obligations towards the project. A Manhattan man was sentenced to life in prison on Tuesday after being convicted of murdering his wife. 29-year-old Kamahl Bobian was sentenced to 50 years to life in prison for first degree murder of his estranged wife Shannell back in 2021. Bobian was also sentenced to 52 months in prison for aggravated burglary and 24 months on two counts of violating a protective order. The 24 month sentence will be held concurrently while the the life sentence and aggravated burglary sentence will be consecutively. The Jingle Bell Rock has been found by a Junction City family. Christina and Jeramy Brown, who are former members of the United States military, found the rock on Monday near Bishop Stadium and CiCo Park. Christina explained her family’s strategy on how she was able to find the rock. Christina said she was humbled by the opportunity and thanked the sponsors of the event. Sentencing will be held tomorrow afternoon in Riley County District Court for Kamahl Bobian, the 29-year-old Manhattan man who was convicted last month of murdering his estranged wife. Bobian was convicted for one count of first degree murder, one count of aggravated burglary and two counts of violating a protective order on Nov. 3. Jurors took a little over 2 hours to deliberate before convicting Bobian of his crimes. Bobian faces a sentence anywhere from 50 years to life in prison. The Riley County Police Department announced the hiring of a new PIO on Monday. Ashley Tokoi will be the new Public Information Officer for the department, working for the department’s five divisions. Tokoi replaces Aaron Wintermote, who left the department on Sept. 22. Prior to working for RCPD, Tokoi was a Public Affairs Specialist for the United States Department of Agriculture where she played a pivotal role in shaping the organization’s public image and communication efforts. Tokoi was introduced by Director Brian Peete at Monday’s law board meeting.
