Downtown Manhattan Inc. is looking at ways to improve its website and other services in its recent budget request to the city of Manhattan. Executive director Gina Snyder explains. The current website is 10 years old according to Snyder and is also not mobile friendly. Snyder says all options have been discussed including the possibility for a mobile app. Downtown Manhattan has requested $186,000 from the city for the next fiscal year. These funds are generated through Transient Guest tax also known as the hotel tax.
Geary County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to an accident on Sunday in Smoky Hill. Deputies responded to a single-car accident in the 1200 block of Taylor Road in Smoky Hill just after 4 pm to find a 2014 Ford F150 in the eastbound ditch. Mathias Schoenhofer of Junction City wrecked his truck after he went too far after trying to reverse the vehicle so he could turn around. This caused the vehicle to roll once before coming to a rest. No injuries were reported in the accident.
Riley County Police Department filed a report for theft on Sunday. Officers filed a report of theft just after 9:30 am in the 2300 block of Sky-Vue Lane. Officers listed a 38-year-old male as the victim when it was reported a lock was cut from a trailer and a Hack Attack pitching machine, valued at approximately $2,600, and a Honda portable generator, valued at approximately $1,100, were taken by an unknown subject. Fireworks filled the 4th of July night sky on Thursday in Wamego, a part of the world-famous Boomtown show, one of the nation’s top fireworks attractions. Thousands flooded into Boomtown packing the field next to the baseball diamonds to the point that people who couldn’t get in pulled to the side of Highway 24 to catch the spectacle. Two local men were arrested on Tuesday for violating the offender registration act. 49-year-old Damon Brown of Ogden was arrested for the first time on that charge, being charged with four counts. He remains confined in the Riley County Jail on a bond of $20,000. 49-year-old Michael Vazquez of Manhattan was also arrested on five counts of violating the offender registriation act, the second time he’s been charged with that violation. He remains confined in the jail on a $50,000 bond.
Riley County Police Department filed a report for arson in the 2500 block of Stagg Hill Road on Monday just before 7 am. Officers listed Russ Briggs as the victim when it was reported that apartment #5 in the complex he owned sustained fire damage of an unknown origin. The fire led to a total loss of $50,000. None were injured or killed during the fire and Manhattan Fire Department firefighters were able to extinguish the fire within 15 minutes. Anyone with information can contact Crime Stoppers
Two candidates are vying for the position of Pottawatomie County Sheriff this election season with the retirement of Shane Jager from the position. One of those running for the position is current undersheriff Doug Adams, a 25-year veteran of law enforcement who has served in a number of roles for the Sheriff’s Office. Geary County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of theft on Tuesday evening. Deputies responded to the 400 block of State Avenue in Grandview Plaza to a report of theft that occurred on Monday in the 1000 block of East 6th Street in Junction City. The report filed alleges someone stole batteries of an electric sign owned by RoadSide Traffic Systems Inc and the sign was damaged in the process. The case is still pending investigation at this time.
