The Riley County Law Board approved a motion on Monday to publish a budget that will be officially voted on at their meeting next month. After initially presenting last month a budget of $28.9 million, with an increase of 6.6%, RCPD presented other options Monday, showing reduced asks, totaling between 5 and 6 percent. The Law Board ultimately selected option 2, totaling a 5.88% increase, amounting to $28.5 million. The total dollar amount increase is approximately $1.8 million. Manhattan area lawmakers took part in a legislative forum, hosted Thursday by the Manhattan Area Chamber of Commerce. Medicaid expansion failed again and each of the Manhattan delegation shared their thought on the topic, which has long been pushed by Gov. Laura Kelly. Kansas remains just one of nine states to not have expanded Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act. State Rep. Mike Dodson expressed frustration with it not being passed. “We had Medicaid expansion heard in committee,” he said. “I would equate that whole process to a mock trial.” State Rep. The Manhattan Area Chamber of Commerce held its monthly military relations luncheon on Friday with its featured speaker being retired Sergeant Major of the Army Michael Tony Grinston who was recently appointed the CEO of Army Emergency Reserve. Grinston served 36 years in the Army before retiring last November. He has ties to the Flint Hills, being stationed on Fort Riley from 2013 to 2015 being apart of the Big Red One Soldiers. Gov. Laura Kelly has once again vetoed a legislative proposal for broad tax cuts, the third veto this year. Her action Thursday all but guarantees a special session to be called as the legislature and governor continue to work toward a compromise. The plans included cutting income, sales and property taxes by a total of $1.45 billion or more over the next three years. Prior to Thursday’s announcement, the Manhattan Area Chamber of Commerce hosted Manhattan area lawmakers who weighed in on the session’s biggest debate this year. A Manhattan man is in jail on Wednesday following a Tuesday night arrest on a probable cause arrest for criminal damage to property. 35-year-old Mason Randolph was arrested in the 2400 block of Brockman Street at approximately 10:45pm on Tuesday on a single count of criminal destruction to property with a value anywhere between $1,000 and $25,000. He was also charged with a single count of violating a protection order. Randolph was previously arrested in March on a charge of aggravated domestic battery which is believed to have lead to the protection order. He remains confined in the Riley County…
