Sunset Zoo held its 15th annual Party for the Planet event on Saturday, ahead of Earth Day. Marketing and Development Officer Melissa Kirkwood says the event is the zoo’s annual opportunity to share with the public its mission of conservation. Saturday’s event saw community booths as well as all-day activities like a scavenger hunt, an animal enrichment event and a bounce house for kids, as well as face painting and entertainment. Conservation groups including K-State Master Gardeners were on hand for the celebration. Earth Day officially is recognized yearly on April 22.

A Texas woman was arrested late Saturday on a warrant for distribution of a controlled substance causing death. According to the Riley County Police Department, 21-year-old Dache Island-Jones is additionally charged with two other counts, including distributing an opiate use of a communication device in the commission of a felony. Bond was set at $500,000. She remains in custody. The arrest stems from an ongoing investigation into the June 2023 Fentanyl overdose death of an unidentified Manhattan resident. Earlier this month, a co-defendant, 22-year-old Daron Island-Jones was also arrested on the same charges. He also remains in custody. RCPD is encouraging others with pertinent…

The Manhattan City Commission on Tuesday revised a recent decision to provide incentives for low-income housing projects, seeking state tax credits. Commissioners debated three options, ultimately selecting a resolution that involves covering the project’s building permit and water/sewer connection fees without specifying the exact funding source. Commissioners had previously opted to utilize workforce housing funds for most of it and cover the remainder with economic development funds. The Midwest Dream Car Collection held their fifth anniversary celebration in Manhattan on Wednesday night and unveiled a new car to their collection, a 1948 Tucker 48, which is one of the rarest cars to find on the planet. The ’48 Tucker is just one of 51 Tuckers created and one of just 46 remaining on Earth. Director of Vehicle Operations and Curator Doug Meloan says most all of them are in museums with roughly 16-17 that are privately owned. Local officials say the ongoing Burklund/Axtelton wildfire in northern Riley and Pottawatomie County is about 90% contained. In a statement late Tuesday, Riley County Public Information Officer Vivienne Leyva noted that Pottawatomie County has released all mutual aid crews. On the Riley County side, crews from both counties, Kansas Forest Service, the Kansas City Kansas Wildland Task Force, Pittsburg and Garden City remained on scene monitoring fire conditions. Kansas state representative Sydney Carlin of the 66th legislative district has officially filed to run for re-election to another two-year term in the Kansas House. Carlin was first elected to the state House in 2002 and was re-elected in 2022 after running unopposed in the general election. Prior to her tenure in Topeka, Carlin served on the Manhattan City Commission from 1993 to 1997 and was also the mayor of Manhattan from 1996 to 1997. The primary will be on Aug. 6 with Election Day on Nov. 5.
