The Kansas Legislature was finally able to pass long awaited tax reform over the weekend following months of debate between the legislature and Gov. Laura Kelly. The bill will cut taxes by $1.57 billion over the next three years, following the failure to pass a $1.4 billion package that was negotiated on between Kelly and Republican leaders in the House and Senate. The measure advanced 24-9 in the Senate and unanimously in the House and now heads to the governor’s desk for final approval. 67th District State Rep. The annual Manhattan’s Got Talent show is coming back to Manhattan High School tomorrow evening. The show which is hosted by the Manhattan High interpersonal skills and special education department. IPS teacher and Special Education co-department head Jamie Schnee says the show has plenty of great acts that’ll provide a number of laughs and emotions. “We’ve got twenty amazing acts from students across the interpersonal skills department,” she said. “We also have students across Manhattan High School performing as well. The Manhattan City Commission unanimously approved three resolutions on Tuesday to provide sales tax exemptions for three housing projects in the city of Manhattan. The three projects included Sunflower Flats, Cypress Ridge and the Hunter Drive Apartments. Throughout their discussion on Tuesday, the commissioners were comfortable with using industrial revenue bonds on the projects. The city will commit over $312,000 in incentives to cover building fees and water and sewer connection, paid for primarily through the city’s workforce housing sales tax fund, with economic development funds covering the remainder, according to Mayor Wynn Butler. “My preference is we use job force funds so we stay…

With the impending retirement of CEO Robbin Cole at Pawnee Mental Health Services, a new CEO is set to the take the reins in the coming months. Michael Rezkalla was appointed by the Pawnee Mental Health Governing Board in late-January and he has been working with Cole through the transition before her retirement. Rezkalla arrived in Manhattan from Worchester, Massachusetts where he worked for UMass Memorial Community Healthlink, which is a large multi-service, behavioral health, substance use disorder treatment and community health provider. On Tuesday, Kansas State University held a town hall meeting as they begin the process of the university’s new master plan. It has been 12 years since the university last adopted a master plan. A Manhattan legislator has an update on proposed Medicaid expansion in the state of Kansas. Rep. Sydney Carlin of the 66th legislative district spoke about the bill’s progress in the Kansas House. “The bill will not be coming to the floor,” she said. “The committee chair decided not to bring it to the floor for a vote.” Carlin says that all House legislators from the Manhattan area outside of herself voted against an amendment in favor of Medicaid expansion. “I’m very unhappy about that,” Carlin said.
