At Wednesday’s USD 383 meeting, board members and administrators congratulated Ashlyn Kuhlmann on winning the 2024 Kansas Horizon Award which is sponsored by the Kansas State Department of Education. According to the KSDE website, the goal of the award is to “recognize exemplary first-year teachers who perform and distinguishes themselves as outstanding.” Every year, KSDE chooses 32 recipients for the award. Kuhlmann is a social studies teacher at Manhattan High School and a graduate of Kansas State University. She was presented with a certificate prior to Wednesday’s meeting.

The USD 383 Manhattan-Ogden School Board will hold its first meeting in the month of February on Wednesday night. The main item of business on tonight’s agenda is a mid-year report on enrollment in USD 383. According to documents from the school district, over 6,000 students are enrolled in USD 383 schools. New business items include a technology equipment purchase, upgrades to the Eisenhower Middle School gym, and a change order on the Lincoln Education Center when it comes to the asbestos and lead paint abatement. The meeting gets underway at the Robinson Education Center at 6:30 p.m.

The Manhattan Lions Club held its annual biscuits and gravy breakfast at the College Avenue United Methodist Church Saturday. The event raised around $2,000 and saw a large turnout as the group accepted donations for four different charities. Club president Diana Chapel spoke about the different charities that proceeds would be going towards. The group also auctioned off a K-State quilt at Saturday’s breakfast with the proceeds from the auction going towards KSDS Assistance Dogs. The Kansas State Innovations Partners president and CEO is stepping down to take a new position at Oregon State University. Rebecca Robinson is expected to take a job as the associate vice president for economic development and industry relations and senior advisor for strategic intiatives at Oregon State. In a press release from the university, Robinson is credited for building industry partnerships for K-State and driving university-based economic development in the Manhattan region and beyond. The Kansas Basketball Coaches Association released their latest rankings on Tuesday that were headlined with Wamego Girls Basketball remaining at No. 2 in the 4A Girls Rankings. While they were little changes in this week’s rankings, Junction City Boys did see a bump up by two spots from No. 9 to No. 7 in the 6A Boys rankings. Two Manhattan men are in custody after police say they robbed a man near downtown Manhattan. The Riley County Police Department arrested 25-year-old Brandon Welty and 19-year-old Joseph Bauer on charges of aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon. The arrests occurred just after 5 p.m. Tuesday in the 400 block of Leavenworth Street. In a statement, RCPD says a 29-year-old man had his backpack, containing several items, stolen after the pair brandished a weapon. A search warrant was conducted and the two were soon apprehended.
