Kansas State Senator-elect Kenny Titus (R-Manhattan) has filed a bill that would exempt the state of Kansas from Daylight Savings Time. The issue of Daylight Savings has been a topic of discussion at the federal level, as several bills have been filed to exempt the United States from Daylight Savings while others have looked to make it permanent. In the mid-1970s, the US tried to make DST permanent, but it was overturned after two years due to public backlash. It was a record-setting blizzard for Northeastern Kansas on Sunday. Snowfall estimates say that Wamego received 17.5 inches of snow, which is the third-most on record for the city behind 20 inches on Feb. 25, 1912 and 2 feet of snow on Feb. 27, 1900. Manhattan had 14.8 inches, which is the second-most for a single day on record. The most snow in a single day all-time was 18 inches for Manhattan on Feb. 27, 1900. The current Pottawatomie County Commission will meet for the final time on Monday as commissioners Pat Weixelman and Greg Riat will say goodbye to the county commission. Weixelman was first elected to the county commission in 2008 and has been on the commission for 16 years. He decided to not run again this past November and will be replaced by Merl Page. Riat was appointed to the county commission in 2019 after the resignation of Travis Altenhofen. He was then elected to full term in 2020 but was defeated in the primary in August by Bill Drew. RCPD says they’re investigating a burglary incident in which a unknown subject entered an apartment and lit a carpet on fire. Officers filed the report on Thursday evening in the 700 block of Humboldt Street just prior to 5 p.m. and list several individuals as the victim in this case. Officers are listing this as a burglary and aggravated arson. Total loss in this report is unknown at this time. Anyone with information in this case is encouraged to contact Crime Stoppers. Officials with the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) say that the public risk remains low when it comes to avian flu. KDHE also says there has been no human-to-human contact of the virus yet, but it remains a risk in birds and they’re working with those who have large poultry and flocks. They also recommend to avoid contact with birds who have tested positive for the virus. Avian flu is spread by migratory waterfowl which is primarily ducks and geese. A Riley County District Court judge on Tuesday denied a Randolph man’s request to end his probation early. Russell Peterson, 83, was convicted of involuntary manslaughter in December 2023 for the 2021 death of Adam Samuelson. Peterson ran a stop sign and hit Samuelson’s vehicle with his. Judge Grant Bannister sentenced Peterson to 36 months probation and 60 days in jail, which he completed earlier this year. The full story can be read at The Mercury. A Winter Storm Warning has been issued from 9 AM Saturday to midnight CST Sunday night for portions of central, east central, north central, and northeast Kansas. The National Weather Service warns of heavy mixed precipitation, including 8 to 12 inches of snow, one-quarter inch of sleet, and up to two-tenths of an inch of ice. A new location for Common Table in Manhattan is opening in the new year. Common Table provides free meals to members of the community who need them. To this point, local churches have been alternating hosting meals so that each day of the week is covered. Starting Monday, Common Table will begin hosting meal service at the Lincoln Education Center at 901 Poyntz Ave., which is the former Manhattan High East Campus building and now houses the district offices. The company Meat Works of Kansas has been scammed out of $60,000 in an internet scam. RCPD filed a report for theft by deception on Tuesday in the 300 block of Main Street in Riley when it was reported the business was scammed through an email into buying 15,000 pounds of ground beef from an unknown subject. On its website, Meat Works describes itself as a “well established and respected provider of custom Wagyu beef processing and purveying services.” The company provides beef to the Booth Creek Wagyu chain.
