Government offices for Riley County will be closed next Thursday Jan. 9 in honor of former President Jimmy Carter who passed away on Sunday at the age of 100. President Joe Biden announced that day will be a National Day of Remembrance for the former President, meaning that the county offices will be closed that day. That also means Riley County Commissioners will not meet that morning for their regularly scheduled commission meeting. Two St. Mary’s residents were injured in an accident in Jackson County that occurred on Wednesday evening. The accident occurred just after 6 p.m. on US-75 when a 2017 GMC Acadia was traveling westbound on 158th Road and failed yield the right of way to a 2007 Chrysler Town & County that was traveling southbound driven by 56-year-old Larry Vanvleck of St. Mary’s. The driver of the Acadia, 83-year-old Maria Flores of Eagle Pass, Texas, was injured in the accident along with two others who were both seriously injured. A Manhattan woman with a lengthy criminal record was arrested again on Tuesday on charges for failure to appear. Officers arrested Allyson Gann, 37, on the charge that stems for a previous arrest over for aggravated battery, domestic battery and battery from an incident that occurred on Sept. 1, 2024. As previously reported, Gann was arrested in November on charges of criminal damage to property with a value between $1,000 and $25,000 and the use or possession of drug paraphernalia. A local woman is behind bars following her arrest on Tuesday evening arrest in Manhattan that includes charges for battery on law enforcement and domestic battery. Police arrested Asia Foster, 32, just prior to midnight in the 500 block of Yuma Street. Foster has been charged in this case on two counts of battery of a law enforcement on duty along with single counts of sexual and domestic battery and interference with law enforcement. Bond has been set in this case at $10,000 and Foster remains confined in the Riley County Jail at the time of this report. Click here…
Two young men were taken to a local hospital following an accident on Tuesday afternoon in Clay County that resulted after a chase with law enforcement. The accident occurred just after 1:30 p.m. when 17-year-old Joshua McCulloh of Junction City was travelling northbound on Granite Road in his 2008 Jeep Liberty after he attemped to flee law enforcement. The vehicle veered right off of the roadway and overcorrected, veering left and crossing the roadway into a field on the West side of the road. Those shopping at the grocery store in the new year will see the state sales tax on some items go to zero. Beginning on Wednesday, the sales tax on “food and food ingredients for human consumption and certain prepared foods” will have a sales tax of 0% following legislation that was passed back in 2022 that lowered the tax beginning in 2023 from 6.5% to eventually 0% by 2025. This includes foods like eggs, bread and fruits. Meanwhile, non-food items will be still be sold at a 6.5% state sales tax. This does not apply to all food goods sold…
RCPD filed a report for vehicular burglary on Monday evening following reports that a man had items taken from his vehicle. Officers filed the report just after 7 p.m. in the 2700 block of Brookpark Drive and lists a 39-year-old male as the victim in this case. The man reported to officers that his Matthew’s compound bow and camo Bushnell binoculars were stolen from his vehicle. Total estimated loss is estimated at $2,250. Riley County Police are investigating after reports of a burglary occurred early on Monday morning in Manhattan. Officers filed the report for burglary just prior to 7 a.m. in the 700 block of S. 16th Street. Officers are listing R.M. Baril as the victim when it was reported an unknown subject stole various tools from a construction storage site. The total loss associated with this report is $3,000. Former Kansas congresswoman Martha Keys passed away last Thursday. She was 94. In the mid-60s, Keys worked as a Democratic campaigner, eventually running George McGovern’s 1972 political campaign in the state. Keys served Kansas’ 2nd congressional district for two terms and served Manhattan while she was in Congress. She was elected to Congress during the Watergate elections of 1974 but was defeated in her bid for a third term in 1978 by James Edmund Jeffries. Keys was a strong supporter of the Title IX Amendment that created equal opportunity for female athletes in high school and college, and prohibited gender…
