A three-run first inning and solid pitching carried K-State to a 3-2 win over Iowa in the Wildcats home opener. Shane Conlon got K-State on the board with an RBI-single after back-to-back hits from Ross Kivett and Carter Yagi to start the game. K-State will have to wait for the 2014 home opener. The Wildcats have canceled their series with Milwaukee this weekend due to weather concerns and will instead play three games in Abilene, Texas against Abilene Christian, Grand Canyon University and Missouri State. First up, K-State will play Grand Canyon University on Friday at 1:00. The Wildcats then play a doubleheader on Saturday, starting with an 11:00 a.m. first pitch against Grand Canyon followed by a 7:00 p.m. game against Missouri State. K-State’s regular season schedule for the 2014 football season will last from August to December, includes two Thursday night games and will include five Saturday’s without a game. The slate is highlighted by a match up with Auburn on Thursday, September 18th. The Wildcats’ Big 12 home games will be against Texas Tech, Texas, Oklahoma State and Kansas, while K-State hits the road to play Iowa State, Oklahoma, TCU, West Virginia and Baylor. Manhattan High boys basketball head coach Tim Brooks won’t be on the bench for the Indians’ game tomorrow night at Emporia, according to MHS administrators. “At this time, the team is under the direction of Shane Sieben and Benji George while administration deals with a personnel issue,” Manhattan High athletic director Mike Marsh said. “I have total confidence in their abilities.” MHS officials gave no details about what will happen beyond the game tomorrow against the Spartans. Three Manhattan High baseball players made their college choices official Wednesday. Outfielder Kellen Myers signed with Butler County Community College, pitcher Henry de Noble signed with Iowa Western Community College and infielder/pitcher Jacob Biller signed with Fort Scott Community College. This trio of Indians join teammate Brett Fehr who has already signed with Wichita State. Manhattan High head coach Don Hess expects that plenty more Indians from this senior class will also end up signing to play college baseball, a group that could become the largest signing class in program history. K-State’s trademark defense was overwhelmed by Kansas in an 86-60 loss in Allen Fieldhouse. It was the eighth straight loss in Lawrence for K-State, with the previous seven losses coming by an average of 19.6 points per game. Kansas shot a red-hot 56.1% from the floor in the game, including shooting over 65% in the first half against the Big 12’s best scoring defense. The Manhattan High girls used a 20-3 2nd quarter to run past Shawnee Heights 66-43 Friday night on Winter Homecoming at MHS. Caroline Ballard had 18 points, Darby Price tallied 14 and Molly Fiser added a career high 13 to pace the Indians, who avenged a home loss last season to the Thunderbirds.
