TOPEKA — Although a recent legal settlement means Kansas can’t delay care for Medicaid patients with hepatitis C, hundreds of the state’s prison inmates will wait another year for the expensive treatment. Kansas News Service reports state prison officials say more than 700 inmates currently have hepatitis C, which damages the liver. About half will receive treatment this year, starting with those who have liver cirrhosis from the virus. Civil rights advocates say the delay in treating some inmates could constitute cruel and unusual punishment because inmates have the right to medical care. Lawsuits have been filed in several states…

Riley County commissioners are looking to make several cuts to the 2020 budget, so as to not have an election. Budget and Finance Officer Tami Robison presented revenues to the commissioners Monday since they now know the cost of the mill and mill levy. Currently, the value of the mill is $657,136 with a mill levy of 44.403 mills to fund the 2020 proposed budget. This is a 3.486 mill increase from the 2019 budgeted mill levy. This is all based on the county having revenue of $13,003,688 and expenditures of $42,124,320. This will require the county have ad valorem tax…

The high water advisory in place in areas downstream from Tuttle Creek Lake — including the Berry Streets and Dix Addition in Northview — has been lifted, but residents are advised to stay aware of the situation. Lake elevation has steadily declined since the end of May, recorded at a level of 1129.48 feet above sea level as of 4:30 p.m. Monday, June 10th. As a result, the Army Corps of Engineers have reduced releases steadily to a level of 12,000 cubic feet per second with the anticipation of further reductions of 3,000 cfs at the end of the week.…

Fire hydrants around the Manhattan community will be painted and flushed out starting this week, according to a Monday release. The Manhattan Fire Department does this annually. The purpose of flowing is to clear out the water lines and ensure the hydrants are functioning as they should. Residents are advised not to drive or ride bikes through the water flows and that children should not play in them either. Hal Lucas, 52, of Manhattan was arrested while in the 6900 block of Fort Riley Boulevard in Ogden on June 8, 2019, at approximately 1:26 AM. Lucas was arrested on offenses of flee or attempt to elude, interference with LEO, possession of paraphernalia, driving while suspended, and possession of methamphetamine. Lucas was issued a $20,000.00 bond causing him to remain confined at the time of this report. Residents in the area of the 1500 block of Tuttle Creek Boulevard may hear some explosions Wednesday, June 12. The Riley County Police Department will be conducting training exercises that involve controlled explosions. Law enforcement personnel will be practicing dynamic entries and as a result, portions of Holiday Drive and Meadows Lane will be closed from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. “The ability to train officers on alternative entry methods in a real-world situation, allows us to be better prepared to respond to certain emergency situations,” Sgt.
