A long-time Manhattan-based lawyer-turned-judge has been appointed to be the next chief judge of the judicial district serving Riley and Clay Counties. Grant Bannister was appointed to head the 21st Judicial District, succeeding the retiring Judge Meryl Wilson. Bannister steps in June 16, the date of Wilson’s effective retirement date. Bannister will hold the position at least through the end of 2019. A new interim dean has been named at The Carl. R. Ice College of Engineering at K-State. Senior Associate Dean Gary Clark has been appointed as of today according to a press release from K-State. Clark will replace Darren Dawson, who accepted the position of president of the University of Alabama in Huntsville. This is Clark’s second time serving as interim dean of the college. He served in the position during the 2013 and 2014 academic year. Clark will start in the new position on June 16th.

The College of Veterinary Medicine at K-State has a new dean. Bonnie Rush has been selected for the position according to a press release from the university. Rush has been serving as interim dean of the college since 2017, and was appointed by Provost and Executive Vice President Charles Taber. Rush’s area of clinical expertise is equine respiratory disease. She will be charged with leading the college on a variety of fronts including student, faculty and program development, teaching, research and program accreditation . Officers filed a report for aggravated assault and criminal damage to property in the 2500 block of Farm Bureau Rd. in Manhattan on June 6, 2019, at approximately 9:45 PM. Highway K-13 between Riley and Pottawatomie Counties over Tuttle Creek dam will be opening again next week. The roadway was closed in February 2018 for a project replacing the bridge deck over the spillway structure, it will open again Monday, June 10th. Pedestrian and non-motorized traffic will be prohibited on or along K-13 as well as between Dyer Road and Tuttle Cove Road due to safety concerns. OVERLAND PARK — Four people are accused of using counterfeit $100 bills on shopping sprees across the Kansas City area. Prosecutors say the four were caught after Overland Park Marriott Hotel employee reported seeing them throwing trash away in containers that weren’t near their rooms. Prosecutors say the suspects were trying to dispose of evidence after they altered $1 bills to look like $100 bills. TOPEKA –Two Republican leaders say they have doubts that the Kansas Senate will confirm Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly’s choice to be the next head of the state prison system. Kelly on Wednesday stood by her appointment of top Idaho corrections official Jefferey Zmuda as Kansas corrections secretary. Zmuda is set to take over the Kansas Department of Corrections in July. LAWRENCE — The University of Kansas is paying a former student-athlete $40,000 to settle a lawsuit claiming she became ill because of mold in the vents of her dormitory room. The Lawrence Journal-World report s the university denies the claims but agreed to pay Laine Evans $20,000 and her attorneys $20,000 to settle the lawsuit. The agreement released Tuesday says the university and Evans used mediation in the case to avoid the expense and uncertainty of litigation.
