Riley County commissioners approved the 2021 budget during their meeting Monday. The commission held a public hearing for the budget, however no one from the public made any comments. Budget and Finance Officer Tami Robison says the proposed 2021 mil levy is 42.285, which is a 0.776 mill decrease from last year. The regular county funds have a total budget authority expenditures at $65,501,116, with a levy of $28,312,598. Robison says she will have to come back for a resolution for the fire district. WELLINGTON, Kan. — Police say the suspect in a shooting death in Wellington turned himself into authorities. Twenty-one-year-old Walter Edward Taylor III, of Wellington, was arrested on suspicion of second-degree murder. Wellington police chief Tracy Heath says Taylor is a suspect in the death of 34-year-old Travis Schneider, also of Wellington. Heath says Taylor was a passenger in a car driving next to a truck driven by Schneider Wednesday in Wellington. The two men got into an argument and Taylor fired one shot, which hit Schneider, who died at the scene. Taylor was arrested after he turned himself in. Heath…
OVERLAND PARK, Kan — A 26-year-old Kansas man is charged with battery of a law enforcement officer during a protest against racism and police violence in Overland Park. Darrien Richmond, of Shawnee, was charged Saturday and was released on $2,500 bail. Overland Park spokesman Sean Reilly said Richmond caused scrapes and bruises on an officer’s hands during the protest. Reilly did not have details about how the officer was injured. Organizers of the protest say Richmond was running to protect his wife when he was arrested. Richmond was one of four people arrested after a protest involving about 30 people.…

The Kansas Department of Agriculture is asking the public to report receipt of any unsolicited packages of seeds. The KDA has been notified that several Kansas residents have received unsolicited packages containing seeds that appear to have originated from China. The types of seeds in the packages are unknown at this time. The packages were sent by mail; some have been labeled as jewelry and they may have Chinese writing on them. *Updated 9:30 a.m. Saturday The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has confirmed one new death related to COVID-19 in Riley County. The death involved a 96-year-old woman who was a resident of Leonardville Nursing Home. The woman died on June 26 after testing positive for COVID-19 on June 10, although she was not showing symptoms at the time of the test. KDHE notified the health department and the Office of Vital Statistics classified her cause of death as COVID-19.
