MANHATTAN — Thursday marked the ninth annual Pig Out for Parkinson’s hosted by Cox Brothers BBQ and the Meadowlark Hills Parkinson’s program. Cox Brothers Partner Bud Cox says the event continues to grow every year. Meadowlark Hills Parkinson’s program leader Michelle Haub says having the event at Cox Brothers is a special opportunity for them on a couple of levels. Haub says the event has introduced Meadowlark Hills with many people who have been diagnosed with Parkinson’s for the first time. TOPEKA — Kansas’ highest court is preparing to rule on whether the state constitution protects abortion rights. The state Supreme Court said it would issue a decision Friday in a lawsuit filed by two abortion providers in 2015 against a Kansas law banning a common second-trimester procedure. A trial-court judge ruled that the state constitution’s Bill of Rights provides protections for abortion rights that are independent of protections under the U.S. Constitution. If the Kansas Supreme Court agrees, state courts could invalidate abortion restrictions upheld by the federal courts. Such a decision also would likely spur an attempt from abortion…

TOPEKA — Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly and top Republican legislators have met to try to break a stalemate on expanding Medicaid in Kansas. Negotiations failed Wednesday because Kelly contends that lawmakers approve a plan this year and the GOP leaders insist on waiting until next year. Kelly set aside four hours for talks in her Statehouse office with the majority leaders and heads of the health committees in the House and Senate, who all oppose her expansion proposal. Wamego area students and veterans are returning from their Honor Flight to visit Washington D.C. war memorials, and the community will gather to welcome them home Thursday. The Homecoming Ceremony will take place in the Wamego High School gymnasium at 9:30 p.m., but doors open at 8:30 p.m. The celebration will feature a band and the Honor Flight bus will arrive accompanied by a motorcycle escort arranged by the American Legion riders. City of Manhattan administration will continue working on a potential ballot question to raise the city’s sales tax rate. Manhattan City Commissioners expressed interest in sending the decision to voters in November at their Tuesday work session. They’re looking at a 0.3 percent sales tax increase, which would raise the base rate in Manhattan from 8.95 percent to 9.25 percent.
