WICHITA — Wichita officials have agreed to pay $125,000 to settle a lawsuit with an 81-year-old woman who was hurt when a city worker ran into her family’s car with a front-loader truck. The Wichita Eagle reports that the City Council approved the lump sum payment to Francill Wilson on Tuesday. She sued in 2017 after the city denied a claim she made for damages related to the 2015 crash. The lawsuit says the city employee ignored a stop sign while turning right. OGDEN — Riley County Police received a report of shots fired Tuesday morning which led to a brief lockdown of Ogden Elementary. Public Information Officer Rachel Pate says officers received a report of a man walking down the street with a gun in the 300 block of 11th Street shortly before 9 a.m.At the police department’s request schools in the vicinity were placed on secure campus. Officers apprehended 40-year-old Justin Bauer of Ogden at around 9:10 a.m. without incident. There were no injuries. The March year to date budget and expenditure report shows the 2019 budget year is 25% of the way through for Riley County. County Clerk Rich Vargo says the overtime wages for the public works were high, but this was to be expected. Vargo says there are four departments that are a little over the 25% with their budget, but they do not impose a budget violation. Vargo says they still have the 2.5 million dollars set aside in the budget stabilization fund in the case of an emergency.

DERBY — A new hospital will open soon in the Wichita suburb of Derby. The Wichita Eagle reports that the $40 million Rock Regional Hospital is part of a new 15-acre medical campus. Staff began occupying the 31-bed hospital in February. But Hospital CEO Jason Eitutis says it’s awaiting state inspections and clearance by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment to start accepting patients. A group of developers, local investors and private capital firms called Rock Medical Assets owns the for-profit hospital as well as an ambulatory center. WASHINGTON — Outside allies of President Donald Trump have launched a public campaign urging him to nominate former Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach as his next secretary of Homeland Security. WICHITA — A Riley County High School alum was recently named the 2019 Journalist of the Year by Kansas Collegiate Media. Lindsey Temaat, managing editor of Allen Community College’s student newspaper The Allen Flame won the award in the two-year division Monday at the KCM Spring Conference in Wichita. Temaat competed against applicants from other Kansas two-year institutions.
