Groovy people from across the Manhattan area got down for a cause the K-State Alumni Center for the 2019 Polyester Party Friday, April 5. The party is a fundraiser for the Johnson Cancer Research Center and is entering its eighth year, founded and emceed by KMAN Program Director Dave Lewis in honor of his wife Elena who died of cancer in 2006. Tickets could be purchased for $60 or in packages and featured live music by Disco Dick and the Mirrorballs, food and drink and a bra art contest. MANHATTAN — A $4 million fundraising campaign has been launched by the Flint Hills Discovery Center Foundation to enhance technology and increase activities for youth in the community. The Next Vistas campaign was announced at Saturday’s annual Friend of the Flint Hills Ceremony. The campaign will support three major initiatives including KID-SCAPE, a youth-focused, interactive experience on the second floor mezzanine level. It also will create endowed funds for expanded educational classes and workshops for children in addition to other activities. The third initiative is aimed at improving technology. GARDEN CITY — A conflict across the world in Myanmar has reached into a refugee center that for years has helped immigrants who arrive in Garden City to find jobs. The LiveWell Finney County’s Neighborhood Learning Center, has provided a place for refugees to bond, learn English and adjust to life in the U.S. after they arrive in the western Kansas town. Refugees from Myanmar once known as Burma brought along tensions between the predominantly Muslim ethnic Rohingya minority and the Buddhist Burmese. WICHITA — A court has ordered Kansas to pay legal fees arising from its efforts to block publication of notebooks kept by the lead investigator into the murders chronicled in Truman Capote’s book “In Cold Blood.” KCUR reports the Kansas Court of Appeals ruled last week the state must pay more than $168,000 to attorneys who represented the investigator’s son and a literary memorabilia dealer in Seattle. On Friday April 5, 2019 at about 7:39am, The Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s received a report of a two vehicle accident on Highway 13 near Michael’s Road, about 3 miles north of Tuttle Creek Dam in rural Pottawatomie County. Sheriff’s Deputies, EMS and Fire units responded to the scene and due to total road blockage of the highway and dense fog conditions, assistance was requested from the Kansas Department of Transportation and Kansas Highway Patrol. POTTAWATOMIE COUNTY — One person was hospitalized and Highway 13 was closed temporarily Friday morning due to a collision between an SUV and semi truck southwest of Westmoreland. The driver of the SUV was taken to a local hospital as a result of the incident, occurring at approximately 7:45 a.m. North and southbound traffic on Highway 13 was blocked until after 9 a.m. The Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Department and Kansas Highway Patrol worked the scene this morning. The occupants identities have not yet been made available.
