POTTAWATOMIE COUNTY — One person was hospitalized and Highway 13 was closed temporarily Friday morning due to a collision between an SUV and semi truck southwest of Westmoreland. The driver of the SUV was taken to a local hospital as a result of the incident, occurring at approximately 7:45 a.m. North and southbound traffic on Highway 13 was blocked until after 9 a.m. The Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Department and Kansas Highway Patrol worked the scene this morning. The occupants identities have not yet been made available.
MARYSVILLE — Authorities say Kansas Bureau of Investigation agents served search warrants at several locations in Marysville, including at the Marshall County Clerk’s Office. KBI spokeswoman Melissa Underwood told The Topeka Capital-Journal the warrants were related to an ongoing criminal investigation into alleged conduct by an employee of the clerk’s office. She said more information would be released if the investigation leads to an arrest or charges. Additional details weren’t immediately released.
An attorney representing four school districts suing Kansas says an education funding plan approved by lawmakers isn’t adequate. Attorney John Robb predicted Thursday that the Kansas Supreme Court will reject Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly’s plan for an education funding increase of roughly $90 million a year. Robb said it doesn’t provide enough new money for public education after the 2019-20 school year. The House approved the plan, 76-47, and the Senate passed it, 31-8, to send the measure to Kelly. The Manhattan-Ogden USD 383 Board of Education was presented the special education program annual report during their meeting on Wednesday. Board Member Katrina Lewison asked Executive Director Dr. Deb Howser about the total number of students in the program. Howser said the report shows an increase of 63 students from last year. The total number of students this year is 1,129, making up 16% of the student population. Howser said their biggest priority right now is recruiting and hiring appropriately trained staff. Kansas State University academics will be researching ways to combat an infectious cattle blood disease thanks to a million dollar U.S. Department of Agriculture grant, according to K-State Today. The USDA’s nearly $1.2 million grant will support an interdisciplinary team in studying ways to prevent the parasitic cause of bovine anaplasmosis — also known as yellow-bag or yellow-fever. The bovine blood disease is the result of parasites known as Anaplasma marginale, often contracted by tick bites, and can lead to death — more often in older cattle. TOPEKA — Kansas legislators are moving closer to passing Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly’s plan for increasing funding for public schools. House Republicans gave up Wednesday night on trying to find an alternative to Kelly’s proposal to increase spending on public schools by roughly $90 million a year. The Senate approved Kelly’s plan last month with bipartisan support. The House has yet to pass a funding proposal but did narrowly pass a bill making changes in education policies.
