WICHITA, Kan. — Officials in Wichita say a person who had been sleeping inside a trash bin is recovering after the bin was dumped into a garbage truck. The Wichita Eagle reports that the incident happened Friday morning, when the garbage truck driver heard the person’s cries for help around 4:30 a.m. and called 911. Fire officials say crews were able to get the person out by “using a truck company to lift them out of the trash compartment without complicating their injuries.” The person was taken to a Wichita hospital with injuries not believed to be life-threatening.

WAMEGO, Kan. — An expanse of untouched native prairie grass has been transformed into a destination for those who want to walk across the tallgrass that greeted settlers. The Manhattan Mercury reports that Mount Mitchell Prairie Guards hope to preserve, protect and promote this area a few miles south of Wamego and east of a bend in the Kansas River as one of the few places left in the world to walk through untouched native prairie grass. They hope to one day see recognized with a dedicated interpretive center and expanded walking trails.

Kansas State University wrapped up its MLK observance week with a special tradition. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s legacy was celebrated Friday with a laying of wreaths at the MLK bust in front of Ahearn Fieldhouse. University leaders spoke briefly at the event. The T. Russell Reitz Animal Shelter of Manhattan held an adoption event over the weekend in celebration of the Super Bowl. Those looking for a new addition to their family could choose from dogs to rabbits and hamsters. County-sales tax The Manhattan City Commission discussed whether it wants to renew a county-sales tax set to expire in 2022 during a goal-setting meeting at the Flint Hills Discovery Center Friday. The half-cent sales tax has been in place since 2002 and has gone towards roads and bridges, property-tax reduction, infrastructure and local business incentives. City Manager Ron Fehr says while the commission is likely in favor of renewing the sales tax, the question is who will it affect going forward. HOLYROOD, Kan. — Authorities are investigating the death of a man in central Kansas as suspicious. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation announced in a news release that law enforcement executed several search warrants Thursday while investigating the death of 56-year-old John Glenn III, of Great Bend. WICHITA, Kan. — Court records say a Wichita father charged with killing one of his twins told authorities he repeatedly told the crying 2-month-old to “shut up” before he squeezed his head “extra hard” and then didn’t notice his son was seriously hurt until he had been playing video games for more than half an hour. The Wichita Eagle reports that the affidavit in the case against 22-year-old Marlin Williams Jr. was released Tuesday. Williams was charged last week with first-degree murder in the death of his son, Marrell, and three counts of aggravated battery.
