The Riley County Police Department is currently investigating a report of burglary that took place in Manhattan Tuesday. Officers filed the report around 6:50 am in the 800 block of Willard Place. A 28-year-old man and 27-year-old female were listed as the victims when it was reported an unknown male suspect broke into a shed and took a Milwaukee Cordless shop vac and tool tote, a Ryobi leaf blower, and other various items. The estimated total loss is approximately $760. Anyone with information on this case is urged to contact crime stoppers.

Officers are currently investigating a report of fraud that took place earlier this month in Manhattan. RCPD says the report was filed on July 1st around 6:00 pm in the 800 block of Juniper Drive. A 44-year-old female was listed as the victim when an unknown suspect reportedly hacked the victim’s Facebook, Instagram, and phone allowing the suspect to retrieve personal and bank information. Manhattan City Commissioners unanimously approved a resolution establishing their intent to exceed the estimated 47.61 revenue neutral rate in 2024 and set a public hearing related to said topic during their Tuesday meeting. During their June 13th work session, commissioners requested the full 9.5% valuation growth for the city to not be captured and expressed interest in lowering it to 6%. Opting for the smaller rate would bring the mill levy to 50.47, a 1.68 decrease from the current 52.15. The Manhattan Parks and Recreation Department is nearing the start of a comprehensive master plan that will take a deep dive into overall planning of the department’s future. Director Aaron Stewart says a community survey is due to come before the city commission next month, with an early fall rollout likely. Manhattan City Commissioners will consider a pair of resolutions tonight including one involving the 2024 budget. City staff are proposing an intent to levy a property tax exceeding the revenue neutral rate and setting a public hearing related to that. The current neutral rate is 47.613 and commissioners will decide whether to increase the levy to 50.470 mills. Feedback provided at the June 13 commission work session was provided to not capture the full 9.5% valuation growth assessed by Riley and Pottawatomie counties, but rather a 6% growth, which would incur a decrease from the 2023 budget of 1.684 mills.…
