(AP) — Transgender people born in Kansas could be prevented from changing their birth certificates to reflect their gender identities if the state’s conservative Republican attorney general is successful with a legal move he launched late Friday. Attorney General Kris Kobach filed a request in federal court asking a judge to end a requirement for Kansas to allow transgender people to change their birth certificates. A Junction City man accused in a March double murder was arraigned this week in Geary County District Court. Online court records show 33-year-old Steven Pierce pleaded guilty on June 9 to two charges of first-degree murder, pursuant to a plea agreement. A sentencing hearing has been deferred to a later date. A status hearing is scheduled for July 13. Pierce is charged with the murders of 75-year-old Valerie Krissman and her husband, 80-year-old Roland Krissman. The couple was found dead March 18. USD 383 celebrated the departure of Superintendent Dr. Marvin Wade and Director of Business Services Lew Faust with a joint retirement party Thursday at the Robinson Education Center. Wade has spent the last seven years serving as superintendent for the Manhattan-Ogden schools, and Faust stepped into the role of Director of Business Services 12 years ago.
