LAWRENCE — Authorities say a Lawrence man won’t be prosecuted for a fatal shooting incident on his porch because his actions were protected under the state’s “Stand Your Ground” law. The Lawrence Journal-World reports no charges will be filed against 44-year-old Robert Patrick in connection with the April 4 shooting that killed 32-year-old Trevor Mohawk of Lawrence. The Shot Stop in Wamego was robbed late Friday night, according to the Wamego Police Department. Officials said the convenience store on Highway 24 was robbed by two male suspects at approximately 11:50 p.m. The armed suspects then fled and were seen heading South from the store on foot. WPD told KMAN that the incident is under investigation and they could not provide any further details at this time. EMPORIA — Emporia police are investigating the theft of more than $51,000 from a women’s shelter. Police Capt. David DeVries confirmed that the Plumb Place reported a possible theft and an investigation was underway but provided no further information. The Emporia Gazette reports a former staff member at the Plumb Place is the focus of the investigation. That staff member has resigned. A board member initially requested the possible discrepancy last year and the organization’s board requested a four-year audit. The results of the audit are expected in the next few weeks. KINSLEY — A 3-year-old boy is hospitalized in Wichita hospital after an accidental shooting at his home in Kinsley. The Edwards County Sheriff says two 3-year-old brothers were involved in the shooting Thursday night. KWCH reports Sheriff Bryant Kurth says one of the brothers accidentally shot the other. The sheriff says the injured boy was airlifted to Wichita suffering from significant blood loss but his condition was not available. Further details were not immediately available.

OVERLAND PARK — Kansas and Missouri officials say law enforcement officials have no reason to issue tickets for not wearing a seat belt instead of other tickets. The Kansas City Star reports that transportation officials in Kansas and Missouri say there’s no incentive for officers to issue more seat belt tickets. Overland Park Police Chief Frank Donchez Jr. says some officers overlooked traffic violations like speeding and instead cited motorists for not wearing seat belts when they’d actually been buckled up. OLATHE — Johnson County prosecutors say they will seek a death sentence for a 24-year-old man charged with raping and killing an Overland Park woman. Korrey Rinke is charged with capital murder in the August 2016 killing of 46-year-old Julianna Pappas. The Kansas City Star reports Rinke is accused of raping Pappas, beating her to death and leaving her body in a wooded area. Rinke was arraigned on rape and capital murder charges Thursday afternoon in Johnson County District Court. His attorneys entered not guilty pleas on his behalf.

The founding pastor of the St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Manhattan died of natural causes Monday at the age of 87. The Rev. Loren Werth first came to Manhattan in 1981 after being assigned to found the parish by the Salina Diocese. The Manhattan-Ogden USD 383 Board of Education approved the publication for the 2018-19 budget during their meeting Wednesday. Business Services Director Lew Faust said the total mill levy will be 56.140 mills, which is a .0128 decrease from last year’s budget.
