TOPEKA — Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly has selected an Idaho prison official as her new secretary of corrections. The governor said in a news release Thursday that she had picked Jefferey Zmuda, the deputy director of the Idaho Department of Correction. He starts July 1. Kelly says this is a critical time of change and recovery for the Kansas Department of Corrections. She says Zmuda has agreed to take on the challenge of restoring the corrections system and improving morale across all facilities. JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – More than 80 people are staying in shelters in central Missouri after tornadoes ripped through the region. Tornadoes caused significant damage overnight in Missouri’s capital city of Jefferson City and in Eldon, a town of about 4,900 residents around 30 miles (48 kilometers) southwest. The American Red Cross opened one shelter in Jefferson City and two in Eldon. Spokeswoman Sharon Watson says 50 people were at the Jefferson City shelter as of late morning. MANHATTAN — The Johnson Cancer Research Center at Kansas State University has announced just how much funding has been raised this year for cancer research. The university said Wednesday the research center awarded $345,042 in fiscal year 2019. In addition to $50,000 to establish a Center of Excellence for Pancreatic Cancer Research and nearly $115,000 to support graduate students, the center provided more than $78,000 for studies into cell cycle regulation as well as premature aging of fat tissue and subsequent increased cancer risk in obese children, just to name a few. MANHATTAN — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers held an informational meeting for the public to inform on the current conditions of Tuttle Creek Reservoir and the dam.
