Wreaths Across America is observed worldwide at more than 1,400 ceremonies in all 50 states as well as at 24 national veteran cemeteries on foreign soil. MANHATTAN — The Riley County Commission approved the city annexation of county property during their meeting Thursday. The 28 acre property is located on the south side of Anderson Ave., west of the intersection of Kimball and North Scenic Drive. The property being annexed belongs to St Luke’s Lutheran Church for their new facility located right outside the city limits. Deputy County Counselor Craig Cox presented the resolution. Riley County Public Works is advising of a road closure on Wednesday, December 19. A structure replacement project is scheduled for that day Southeast of Randolph. As a result, Main Road will be closed to through traffic from Ramp Road to Cove Overlook Drive. The work is expected to be completed by the end of Wednesday, weather permitting. RILEY COUNTY — Fire destroyed a large metal building in north Riley County Friday morning. The building at 5711 Toburen Road, near the Riley County border with Marshall County, was a multi-purpose structure utilized for both agriculture and residential use. Riley County Fire Chief Pat Collins tells KMAN the fire likely started accidentally but that the cause has not yet been determined. Collins says seven Riley County fire trucks and six from Marshall County were on site, and that 17 Riley County volunteer firefighters and 15 from Marshall County battled the blaze for over 4 hours following the call that…

KANSAS CITY — Authorities say a collision with a parked dump truck has left one teen dead and another injured in Kansas City, Kansas. The Kansas City Star reports that police say the teens were riding in a speeding sport utility vehicle that skidded into the city work truck Thursday. It appears that the SUV then struck a guardrail and rolled over. A team of workers who were around the corner didn’t see the crash but came running after they heard the impact. TOPEKA — A gang member who fled to Mexico after a Topeka killing will be sentenced in February. WIBW-TV reports that 25-year-old Fernando Diaz pleaded guilty last week to involuntary manslaughter in the death of 22-year-old Christopher Galvan. In July 2015, Galvan was found wounded in a crashed car. He died three days later. Diaz initially was charged with second-degree murder and fled the state after a warrant for his arrest was issued. The U.S. Marshals Service announced this September that Diaz had been arrested in Mexico. Court records say that as part of the Diaz’ plea agreement, prosecution and…
LAWRENCE — The Douglas County Commission is considering a plan to add between 84 and 154 beds to the county jail. Undersheriff Gary Bunting and Assistant County Administrator Sarah Plinsky presented the plan Wednesday. The commission asked for a plan that would allow the county to stop housing 50 to 80 inmates in other counties. Commissioners also want more room for work-release and re-entry programs, and enough beds to separate inmates of different security classifications. TOPEKA — Incoming Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly says she doesn’t think Republican lawmakers will be able to approve a state constitutional amendment on school funding. And, she says, if they did pass the amendment, she believes Kansas voters would reject it. GOP lawmakers have discussed a constitutional amendment for years in reaction to Kansas Supreme Court rulings on school financing. House Majority Leader Dan Hawkins, a Republican from Wichita, said earlier this week he believes there is a renewed interest in an amendment.
