WICHITA — A civil rights group is seeking sanctions against Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach for hiding documents about his plans to change federal voting law amid a lawsuit challenging the state’s proof-of-citizenship voter registration law. WICHITA — More of the Kansas wheat crop is beginning to turn color in a sure sign that harvest time is getting closer. The National Agricultural Statistics Service reported Monday that 23 percent of the crop had colored, ahead of 14 percent at this time a year ago. About 94 percent of the crop has already headed. The agency pegged wheat condition as 8 percent very poor and 16 percent poor. About 29 percent is in fair shape with 40 percent rated as good and 7 percent as excellent. TOPEKA — Attorney General Derek Schmidt has asked Kansas City, Kansas police for more investigative material surrounding the death of a boy last year on a water slide. Schmidt said in a statement Monday that his office is still reviewing the case and that he didn’t know when the inquiry would conclude. The Wyandotte County district attorney asked Schmidt in December to review the case and determine whether anyone should be charged with a crime related to the death of Rep. Officers filed a report for criminal damage to property in the 2800 block of Heartland Valley Rd. on May 22 at approximately 4:05 PM. Officers listed Ferdoas Khmous, 37, of Manhattan, as the victim when he reported that an unknown suspect damaged a Western Bi-Fold door and Western window. Clinical psychologist, Dr. Jennifer Prewitt filed to run for election for USD 383 Board of Education in November. Prewitt and her family have lived in Manhattan for four years, all of which she has worked as a psychologist for Fort Riley. “I was first inspired to run for the board by another psychologist who is on the school board in Topeka,” Prewitt told KMAN Tuesday morning. TOPEKA — Kansas legislators have drafted a new proposal for raising income taxes to fix the state budget and provide additional funds for public schools. House and Senate negotiators agreed Monday on a measure that would raise $1.2 billion over two years. The House planned to debate it Monday evening. The measure would raise income tax rates and eliminate an exemption for more than 330,000 farmers and business owners. The plan would undo most of the past income tax cuts championed by Republican Gov. Sam Brownback. But rates would remain lower than they were before the tax-cutting started in 2012. Kansas faces…
City of Manhattan crews began work on repaving Denison Avenue on Monday morning. They will be installing new water lines and repave the street from Claflin to Anderson. The intersection of Denison Avenue and Claflin Road will be closed through July 3 while crews reconstruct the intersection. Storm sewer will also be installed near the intersection of Hunting and Denison to assist with drainage. Motorists should expect lane reductions, lowered speeds and possible delays on Denison Avenue as this work progresses throughout the summer. Water line installation should be complete by late July. Riley County Police Officers filed a report for rape in Riley County on May 21. Officers listed a 14 year old female as the victim when she reported that she was raped by an 18 year old known to her. Due to the nature of the crimes reported, no additional information will be released.
A fatal motorcycle accident was reported in Pottawatomie County Sunday evening. A 42-year-old Centralia man died in the accident. The Kansas Highway Patrol reports Justin Smith was driving a Harley-Davidson motorcycle northbound on Carnahan Road about 1.3 miles south of Greene Road and south of Olsburg. The cycle driven by Smith failed to negotiate a curve, crossed the center line, went left off the roadway and struck a ditch, causing Smith to go airborne. Smith was wearing a helmet. The accident was reported shortly after 5:30 p.m.
