TOPEKA — Firefighters have rescued a cat from a Topeka tree along with its owner. Topeka Fire Department Shift Commander Todd Williams says the woman and her cat were about 16 feet up in a large tree when they were plucked out Wednesday. The Topeka Capital-Journal reports that the owner had climbed the tree trying to get to her cat. The woman’s identity wasn’t being released.
A former Manhattan man and K-State student has been bound over for trial in Sedgwick County in connection with an October murder case. Dane Owens, 28, was bound over by Sedgwick County District Judge Kevin O’Connor following a preliminary hearing, with bond set at $500,000. His trial has been set for May 15th. As KMAN reported last fall, Owens, who was reportedly a K-State student at the time, was charged in connection with the fatal shooting of 22 year old Rowena Irani of Wichita. FORT RILEY — It was all smiles Wednesday morning inside one of the hangers on Marshall Army Airfield. Family and friends of more than 300 Fort Riley soldiers welcomed back their loved ones, who returned from Afghanistan as part of a regular rotation of forces in support of Operation Resolute Support and Operation Freedom’s Sentinel. They had been overseas since August of last year. The soldiers who were reunited with loved ones Wednesday morning were the first group of more than 800 who were part of those operations. The investigation into the whereabouts of an individual who jumped into the Kansas River on April 5 continues. A news release Wednesday from Pottawatomie County Sheriff Greg Riat indicates the Wabaunsee County Sheriff’s Office, Kansas Highway Patrol, Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Office, and Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks continue efforts to locate the male who had been in a high speed chase, crashed into a Pottawatomie County Sheriff Patrol vehicle, then jumped into the Kansas River off of the Belvue River bridge. Bryson Moffett, 18, of Manhattan, was arrested in the 100 block of E. Bluemont Ave. yesterday at approximately 10:25 AM. Moffett was arrested for distribution of marijuana, as well as on a Pottawatomie County District Court warrant probation violation. Moffett was given no bond and transported to the Pottawatomie County Jail. Jimmie Dodson III, 16, of Manhattan, was arrested in the 00 block of Waterway Pl. yesterday morning. Will Manhattan voters be willing to fund park and recreation improvements through a sales tax increase this November? The answer to that questions remains to be seen. At Tuesday night’s Manhattan City Commission work session, commissioners heard the final report on the Parks and Recreation Facility Feasibility Study and mulled over various options for funding the new facilities and improvements. The proposed $27.5 million stimulus includes new gymnasiums at the Douglas Center, Susan B. Anthony Middle School, and Dwight D. Eisenhower Middle School.
