An uneventful agenda at Wednesday’s Manhattan-Ogden school board meeting cleared the stage for some interesting legislative discussion. USD 383 director of business and finance Lew Faust aired his grievances to board members. Faust has kept up-to-date on action within the House K-12 Education Budget Committee, and he said after a few bad formula proposals, legislators have finally found a formula that functions much like the previous per pupil law that was replaced by block grants. The committee has pledged $4,006 as a baseline per pupil for next year, with an additional $200 per pupil for the next 4 years. This would total around…

TOPEKA — Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback has endorsed a proposal to use a “flat” personal income tax to raise new revenue to fix the state’s serious budget problems. The conservative Republican governor said in a statement Wednesday that he would sign a bill like one before the state Senate. It would impose a 4.6 percent rate for all filers starting next year. That is the top rate for higher-income earners, and the bill would eliminate the 2.7 percent rate now in place for lower-income filers. The bill would also eliminate an income tax exemption for 330,000-plus farmers and business owners that…

PITTSBURG — An incoming Kansas high school principal has resigned after student reporters raised questions about her credentials. The Pittsburg Morning Sun reports that school board members voted Tuesday to accept Amy Robertson’s resignation as Pittsburg High School’s principal. The main concern stemmed from her receiving her masters and doctoral degrees from Corlinns University, an unaccredited, online school. Robertson says she received her degrees before the university lost accreditation. Superintendent Destry Brown praised the reporters with the student newspaper, The Booster Redux, saying: “Our kids ask questions and don’t just accept something because somebody told them.” Brown says the district will…

Aggieville may look completely different in 10 years as the Manhattan City Commission adopted a new plan Tuesday night for the popular bar and shopping district. The plan organizes Aggieville in three distinct areas that allow larger building projects on Bluemont Avenue and Laramie Street, while preserving the historic integrity of buildings along Moro Street and North Manhattan Avenue. The city will hire a consultant to conduct a parking analysis of the plan. City staff hope policy recommendations will come out of that study. The commission also approved a new policy resolution to address the deteriorating gravel alleys in the residential…
