SALINA, Kan. (AP) A man originally charged with attempted capital murder of a police officer pleaded no contest to reduced charges after a jury couldn’t reach a verdict in his trial. The Salina Journal reports 36-year-old Michael Ryan, of Salina, accepted the plea Thursday to attempted voluntary manslaughter of Salina detective Crystal Hornseth. He also pleaded no contest to aggravated assault of his daughter and one of her friends, and criminal discharge of a firearm. The Rolling Hills Zoo near Salina says a 40-year-old orangutan died while he was being prepared for surgery. The Salina Journal reports the orangutan, named Clyde, was scheduled for surgery Wednesday to repair a condition that causes swelling and discharge in the throat. Linda Henderson, development and marketing director at the zoo, says zoo veterinarians with extensive experience in treating orangutans were prepared to perform the surgery when complications arose. She says Clyde was a zoo favorite and had outlived his life expectancy of 28 years. Clyde was born in 1976 at Cheyenne Mountain Zoo in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He…

The Geary County Rural Fire Department is asking for the public’s help in identifying the person or persons responsible for several suspicious fires in eastern and southeastern Geary County. Director Garry Berges says several fires on remote gravel roads have occurred since January 31st of this year. The most recent fire occurred during the evening hours Wednesday, (March 15) and involved the destruction of approximately 110 large bales of brome grass. Loss to the owner was approximately $5,000. Manhattan officials returned on Wednesday night from the National League of Cities conference held in Washington D.C. Manhattan mayor Usha Reddi said that the four-person contingent, which also involved City Commissioner Karen McCulloh, City Manager Ron Fehr, and Asst. City Manager Kiel Mangus, attended several sessions concerning affairs in Manhattan and other similar cities. “[We] talked about the importance of military in our community and how to make them stronger,” Reddi said. An Ogden man was sentenced to more than two years in connection with a residential burglary in Pottawatomie County.  David Huffman, 35, was sentenced Thursday in Pottawatomie County District Court to 27 months, with the sentence to run consecutive to a Riley County sentence he’s already serving time on. Huffman was arrested last May on the Pottawatomie County warrant, which originally listed several theft and burglary charges. He entered a guilty plea in January to residential burglary and making false information. An injury accident occurred in the 600 block of Scenic Dr yesterday at approximately 8:50 AM. When officers arrived, they found that a green GMC Terrain, driven by 36-year-old Lindsey Leborgne of Junction City,  left the roadway and went airborne, striking a gold Toyota Camry, being driven by 73-year-old Mary Hughes of Manhattan, before landing on it’s drivers side in a ditch. Manhattan Boxer, Jake Johnson will be competing this Saturday in San Antonio, Texas in a National Amputee Boxing Association event. This will be Johnson’s first boxing match. The 36-year-old has been training for one and half years in the sport, hoping for the opportunity to compete. He is a member of the KSU Boxing Club and will be competing for the KO Boxing Team, out of Manhattan.
