Officers filed a report for criminal damage to property and theft in the 400 block of Poliska Ln. yesterday morning. Officers listed Shannon Locke, 45, of Junction City, as the victim when he reported that an unknown suspect slashed his vehicle’s tires and stole a cable sling and a 6 foot steel bar. TOPEKA — Kansas legislators who favor balancing the state budget with a big income tax increase are preparing to test fellow lawmakers’ appetite for such a fix. The state House was planning to debate a bill Wednesday that would boost personal income taxes to raise more than $1 billion over two years, starting in July. The measure would abandon core policies championed by Republican Gov. Sam Brownback. The measure has bipartisan support but Republicans in the GOP-controlled House are split. Updated 9:30 a.m. Wednesday (News release from Riley County Police Department): On February 14, 2017, Riley County Dispatch received an assist other jurisdiction request in regards to a chase that originated with the Rossville (Kansas) Police Department. The chase began in Shawnee County, continued through Pottawatomie County, and eventually entered Riley County. Once the vehicle, a black 2009 Lexus entered Manhattan, it ran the stop light at E. Poyntz Ave. and Tuttle Creek Blvd., colliding with a 2014 Chevrolet Equinox, driven by Kelly Alexander, 42, of Clay Center Kansas. The Lexus did not stop, continuing westbound onto Ft. Riley Blvd.…
What a difference a week makes. Last Tuesday night, Manhattan city commissioners left City Hall as the future of larger jets visiting Manhattan Regional Airport was up in the air. In a press release on Friday, the city announced it had decided to accept an offer by American Airlines to begin bringing in 65-passenger CR7 planes. A week ago, commissioners were turned off to the deal due to the high price of security improvements. TOPEKA — Kansas officials and Medicaid expansion advocates are at odds over what it would cost to expand KanCare, the state’s privatized Medicaid program. Proponents say the expansion would be at least budget neutral and possibly profitable because of the money it would bring in from the federal government, fees from managed care organizations and potential jobs created. HUTCHINSON — About 20 employees from a Reno County manufacturing plant were sent to the hospital Monday after being exposed to carbon monoxide in the workplace. SYT USA official Alex Birkenfeldt tells The Hutchinson News that employees were suspicious something was wrong when they began complaining of headaches at the plant. They were all evacuated a couple of hours later. Birkenfeldt says the hospitalizations are a precautionary measure after emergency medical personnel conducted evaluations on-site. One of the greatest quarterbacks to ever don a Kansas State uniform, Collin Klein has been hired as the Wildcats’ new quarterbacks coach, head coach Bill Snyder announced through a press release from the athletic department Tuesday. Manhattan Area Technical College (MATC) will undergo a comprehensive evaluation visit May 1st-3rd by a team representing The Higher Learning The Higher Learning Commission (HLC) is one of six accrediting agencies in the United States that provide institutional accreditation on a regional basis by evaluating an entire institution and accredititing it as a whole. The HLC accredits approximately 1,100 institutions of higher education in a nineteen-state region. The HLC is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
